New Dormitories Bring Town and Gown Closer Together

The new Tel Hai College student dormitories on the outskirts of Kiryat Shemona

For most of its students, Tel Hai is hardly around the corner. In fact the Upper Galilee is just about as far away as one can get in Israel. In local terms, the distances are daunting. As a result, affordable and accessible housing is, for too many students, a precondition to making the move.

Taking advantage of this need, the College's administration decided that Tel Hai would once again serve as an agent of social and economic development for the region: the new dormitories would not be built on campus but rather on the outskirts of Kiryat Shemona, where they can play a significant role in bolstering the northern town with a constant stream of energetic young undergraduate students.

Covering a four-acre site, the new dormitories are eventually to accommodate 420 students in five buildings, each housing 84 students in 21 apartments.
Two of the proposed buildings now stand ready, one a residential building, the other offering students' resource facilities and a recreation center. Their formal dedication launched the November 3rd Tel Hai proceedings. There to celebrate with the students were representatives of the Marais Committee from Paris, the Rashi Foundation, UJIA-UK, UIA Canada and Keren Hayesod who, together, enabled the College to build this residence.

Speaking on behalf of the Marais Committee, Max Rapaport expressed the extraordinary attachment members of the Paris community feel for the Galilee in general and for Tel Hai in particular. "Each visit to the Galilee is for us a huge dose of energy and enthusiasm. People abroad," he continued, "sometimes find it difficult to appreciate the extent of its importance to the State of Israel. But the members of this Committee – and community - know very well the role that Tel Hai College plays in the development of the region, and are pledged to continue supporting this amazing project and to see it through to completion."
